Your Timeline: 10th Grade/Sophomore Year

  • Keep those grades up! Study hard.

  • Sign up for a college savings account or continue to add money to an existing account.

  • Last opportunity to enroll in Oklahoma's Promise — OHLAP.

  • Continue your conversations with your guidance counselors, teachers, family members or trusted adults about your plans for college. Talk with family and friends about their educational choices.

  • Review the high school curriculum needed to satisfy the requirements of the colleges you are interested in attending.

  • Find out about AP and other honors-level courses:

    • What courses are available.
    • Whether or not you are eligible for the classes that you want to take.
    • How to enroll in them your junior year.

  • Update your file or start one if you haven't already. (See 9th Grade/Freshman Year for a list of what it should contain.)

  • Continue extracurricular activities, as many admissions officers look at students' extracurricular activities when considering them for admission.

  • Continue participation in academic enrichment programs, summer workshops and camps with specialty focuses such as music, arts, science, etc.

  • Take the PLAN test to evaluate your skills in English, math, reading and science reasoning, and to help you review your progress toward your educational and career goals. This is a valuable test to help you prepare for the ACT, which you can take during your junior year. Ask your school counselor for more information about the PLAN test.

  • Study for standardized tests like the ACT and SAT. A great place to start is the Test Prep  section right here at OKcollegestart.org.

  • Investigate your options of participating in concurrent enrollment, which allows juniors and seniors to enroll in college courses if they meet certain requirements.

  • Make a list of reasons why you like different colleges and universities — degree programs, location, cost, etc. Visit college campuses and "tour" colleges in the Explore Colleges  section of OKcollegestart.org.
