Real-Life Decision Making

A customer walks in the door and looks around the showroom of your cabinet shop. She is impressed with the design of your kitchen cabinets. "I want to redo my entire kitchen with cupboards just like that," she says.

You are pleased that she likes your designs, and that she wants to hire you to make so many cabinets. "Yes, oak does make for beautiful cabinets," you say.

"Oak?" she asks. "Oh no, I want this design, but I want the cabinets to be made from pine. That would be much cheaper. And could you use plastic hinges instead of metal? That will also save money."

Oh, dear. It is fine to want to save money. But is it worth reducing the quality of the product? Pine is a much softer wood, and marks more easily. Plastic wears and breaks more quickly than metal.

What do you do?
