Custom Boatbuilder

Real-Life Math

One of the duties of custom boatbuilders is giving the customer the look and feel of the boat they want in the size they want. Sometimes, this means being able to make a boat smaller than its size in the original plans.

A customer has asked you to build a custom outboard boat. The customer browsed through your existing plans and chose some he liked. Unfortunately, the plans he chose are for a 17-foot long boat, and he would prefer to have a 15-foot boat. You told him you would call him with an estimate of the cost for the boat in a few hours.

In order to do the estimate, you must figure out the amount of wood needed to build the boat. You have already figured out the hull of the boat. Now you are trying to figure out the size of the deck.

According to your plans, the deck should be 17 feet long and 10 feet wide. How would you figure out the amount of wood needed to complete the deck of the boat?

Hint: Square footage = length x width
