Real-Life Decision Making

Ironworkers face all kinds of conditions in their work. And they are always racing against the deadline. Those two factors can add up to danger. Deciding whether to cancel a day of work is not as simple as looking up and seeing rain.

You are the crew supervisor at a highrise project in the downtown area of a major city. Your crew of 45 workers arrives at 7 a.m. and gets to work. It is a gloomy but fairly dry day. However, you keep one eye on the sky at all times.

The project is already two weeks behind schedule. A rash of severe weather has forced you to call off work several times. The construction company owner called you into his office yesterday to ask you about the delays. He pleaded with you to get the project back on track.

Around 9 a.m., as the work is flowing along smoothly, you feel the first gust of wind. You estimate it at around 20 miles per hour. It's a little frightening, but well within the safety guidelines established for this location.

But a few minutes later, a stronger gust buffets the workers. A few shout out in surprise. Others look a little worried. And they all look at you for guidance.

What do you do?
